A Nottingham mental health service has hosted several events to help raise awareness for NHS England’s Nutrition and Hydration campaign. The activities also formed part of The Huntercombe Sherwood Centre’s larger Sports Relief programme that took place over the weekend.

On Friday 21st March, staff at the Sherwood centre served home-made cakes and coffee to families, friends and external healthcare professionals in the morning to raise money for the charity. Staff participated in a sponsored sports’ morning on the Sunday, which included sack-racing, an egg and spoon race, a hula hoop competition, as well as skittles and obstacle courses. An awards ceremony was held at the end, with each participant receiving a certificate.

One resident and a support worker also undertook a sponsored bike ride in which they cycled 28.4 miles from the centre to Newstead Abbey and back again. They completed the ride in 2 hours and 36 minutes. Diane Dolman, the Registered Manager for Sherwood, said, “NHS England’s Nutrition and Hydration awareness week was a great way for residents, staff and the wider community to appreciate the importance of ensuring people have a healthy diet.

Everyone really enjoyed all of the different activities and we are very proud to raise money for such a worthwhile charity.” Nutrition and Hydration Week was created to improve people’s understanding of the importance of good nutrition and hydration in health and social care environments. Recent evidence has shown that poor nutrition and hydration can seriously damage individuals’ health and wellbeing, increasing both recovery times and mortality rates.
